Curriculum
Reception is part of the Early Years Foundation Stage. We focus on developing the core, fundamental skills that children require throughout their life; the foundations to their futures. Here at Bovingdon Primary Academy we promote learning through a creative, broad and engaging curriculum built around the children’s interests and through carefully selected learning themes.
There are three prime areas of learning which are strongly focussed on as children settle into their new classrooms and develop throughout the year. These are:
- Communication & Language Development
- Physical Development and Personal
- Social and Emotional Development
There are also four core areas of learning which are embedded into the children’s weekly routines and play. These are:
- Maths
- Literacy
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Please see our termly themes and learning aims:
Our termly newsletters show a more detailed outline of our learning intentions:
Daily Routine
Having a clear routine each day helps children to feel safe and secure. Take a look at the weekly timetable to see all the fun learning opportunities Reception have across the week.

Outdoor Learning
We have a passion for outdoor learning in EYFS as this has so many positive implications on children’s wellbeing and their learning. As a team we have developed a playground that is filled with stimulating activities that meet children’s individual needs and also enables children to develop in all 7 areas of learning. In addition to the EYFS playground, Reception use Springfield every Friday afternoon to complete Adult Initiated activities and to explore nature independently in Child Initiated Learning.

Observations
In EYFS we pride ourselves on knowing the children in our setting very well. We observe the children’s learning both through adult led activities and child initiated learning to assess how they are progressing and ensure children are working towards there next steps. We use Tapestry to share with parents how children are progressing with their next steps in PSED, Literacy and Maths.
We encourage parents to share WOW moments from home with us at school using Tapestry and to record their child’s weekly Tapestry challenge using the app.
